What does it mean that I am receiving this postcard?
[Back to top]It means that your name has been selected as a potential juror for a future date. It is not a summons for jury duty. If you qualify and your services as a juror are required, you will receive a written summons in the mail four weeks prior to the Monday you are required to report.
How soon do I need to complete this on-line questionnaire?
[Back to top]Within 10 days.
Can someone help me complete this questionnaire?
[Back to top]Yes, someone can help you complete the questionnaire but you must list the person’s name and the reason why they needed to assist you at the end of the questionnaire.
How will my answers be used and who will have access to this information?
[Back to top]This questionnaire provides information to determine your eligibility and qualifications to serve as a juror in district court. Your answers will be used by the Jury Coordinator and Chief Judge to determine your eligibility to serve. If you are deemed qualified to serve as a juror AND you are summoned to serve, your answers will also be provided for restricted use to the attorneys assigned to the case to assist them during jury selection.
What happens next?
[Back to top]If you are determined to be eligible for jury service, your name is added to the potential juror pool. From that pool, summons are issued periodically. You remain in that pool until you are summoned to serve.
What happens when I report for jury duty on Monday morning?
[Back to top]You will report to the jury assembly room for further instructions. Upon completing your duties, whether you are ultimately selected to sit on the jury or not, you will have satisfied your obligation and will not be eligible for jury duty for 12 months after that.
What happens if I call on the Friday before my assigned date to serve and I am told that I am not needed for jury duty?
[Back to top]Your name will be added back in to the potential juror list and your name may be called again. If this occurs a second time (you are summoned but called off the Friday before trial) then you have satisfied your obligation and will not be eligible for jury duty for 12 months.
How many days would I be expected to serve?
[Back to top]Typically jury trials last one to three days. Occasionally, jury trials last longer. The length of the trial will be told to you when you report on your date of service.
Can I be deferred for jury service?
[Back to top]A onetime deferment may be granted. Approval of all deferments are at the discretion of the Jury Coordinator and/or the Chief Judge.
Why are you asking for my email and phone number and who will have access to that information?
[Back to top]This information will not be shared with other agencies or departments. The sole purpose for collecting email addresses and phone numbers is to provide you with prompt notification regarding changes in jury service if you are summoned as a potential juror. For example, last minute notification of a continuance or cancelled trial or a later start time due to inclement weather. This information, accessible only to the Court, is for your convenience.
I received a text message from (913) 349-8707, (913) 347-7958, (913) 586-2766, or (913) 349-8804. Is this a legitimate text from the Johnson County District Court?
[Back to top]Yes. These numbers are used by the Court to send notifications regarding jury duty. You are able to call the number and be connected to the Clerk's office during business hours. If you reply to the message, you will be sent an automated reply which includes the phone number for the Clerk's office. If you have concerns that the text or call may be fraudulent, please call the Clerk’s office at (913) 715-3365.
What are the consequences if I fail to complete this questionnaire, provide false information in my answers, or fail to report for jury duty?
[Back to top]You may be charged with a Class A misdemeanor or held in contempt of court.
